I just realized I haven't posted anything since February! So sorry!! A lot has happened, yet nothing much new to report. It's a strange juxtaposition, I know.
Let's see - March and April were 2 of the slowest months I've experienced in a while. (I'm talking from my point of view - not from Jose's; he's been working 14-18 hours a day!) The light was in full force. It was a return to normalcy with regards to night and day. It was nice…and short lived. The temps were still in the teens, if not colder at times. The Arctic ocean was filled with big icebergs that looked almost blue in the afternoon light. Hundreds of caribou were out in the tundra grazing on the frozen grass beneath the ice and snow. It was a peaceful sight!
Many of my friends were out in the lower 48 during these months. I spent my days hanging with my little man and visiting Jose on his lunch break. I also dedicated a lot of my downtime to working on a quilt for a dear friend. (and I actually finished it!)
As the end of April approached, we geared up for another family adventure. Our plans took us to Las Vegas to celebrate Amaury's 1st birthday, the Grand Canyon, Fairfax, VA and to NYC. We packed a lot into a small amount of time, that's for sure!
It's whaling season in Barrow. We missed a lot of action while we were away. I heard a few whales were caught and brought back into town. I also heard a crew got swept out by the wind. Luckily, everyone was rescued and all are safe.
Barrow looked different when we got back. The roads were no longer sheets of ice, but wide pits of mud. Brown, as far as you can see. And trash, don't forget what's been hiding underneath the blanket of snow for 7 months. My first discovery when I saw our house was, "we have a deck?" I mean, I knew we had one, but the drifts of snow seriously covered the railings. It looks very different now! We also found a few dead things on our deck. Thank god I have a husband who deals with that.

Amaury and I are happy to suit up and walk the town. I thought my snow boots would hold me over until we leave, but they just get too hot. I bought some great new mud boots. Walking in mud is really fun with the right gear! And…walking in mud burns a lot of calories. Pushing a stroller in mud burns even more! (but for the record, I prefer to walk on ice with my cleats.) The only thing I think about from time to time on my walks is to keep an eye out for polar bears. I know the probability of encountering one without the whole village knowing is pretty rare, BUT it's better to be safe, right?
There is a new restaurant in town, which is big for Barrow! The Top of the World Hotel re-opened (it burned down last year), and the restaurant inside is a hoppin' place. Amaury was ready for his dinner…..
Gimme food!! |
We are trying to figure out where life will take us in the coming months. I'll give an update as soon as we decide!
